Starting baby on cereal

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

My son is almost 5 months old and weighs almost 18 pounds. He is huge. Anyway, the doc says we should start him on cereal....AND I can tell he is not staying as full as he used to. I have tried feeding him cereal twice but he starts crying and HATES it once I put it in his mouth. Since we have had to put cereal in his bottle for a long time now, you would think he wouldn't hate it so much since he is already used to the taste. Does anyone have any suggestions? He needs to start eating this so he will be content longer....

My daughter was a large baby too. 10lbs at birth and 22lbs at 5 months. She was breastfed and by 4 months it did not sustain her appitite. I started her on the cereals but after 2 weeks she was bored with them and wanted more. At 4-5 months I started her on the other jarred baby food. I would add the jarred pears to her cereal for flavor or mix the cereal with Gerber Pear or white grape juice instead of water or breastmilk. Don't use apple juice, it can be very harsh on their digestive track. Give him the fruits and veggies one at a time to test for allergies but with his weight I don't see why you need wait to start him on other foods yet. It is usually recommended to wait until 6 months to start solids but my pediatrician told me with my daughters weight she was fine starting earlier. Double check with your baby's Dr.

My son was huge too... we started him on foods at 5 months too. What we found was that if we made the cereal with formula in it he would take it much easier. I started out with 4 oz of water at first and mixed the appropriate amount of formula in it (2 scoops for me) then I would slowly mix in the cereal until it was the desired consistancy. I also bought the gerber rice cereal with apples, or mixed fruit. there are no chunks in it but the taste is different. At that time I also introduced him to Veggies. I didn't start with the fruit because I wanted him to get used to veggie tastes before the sweets. I didn't want him hooked on sweet stuff. but only try one veggie at a time to check for allergies. my rule was after the 2nd time of feeding and there was no rash or other signs then I went on to another veggie.   I hope this helps good luck.

My son is a biggen too! 25lb at 9months. We started cereal at 4 months mixed with breast milk and applesauce.

i would throw some apple sauce in there. I know they say only rice BUT... it wont hurt him. He might like the different taste. But, it probably is just the new experience that he doesnt like... have you tried let him suck it off your finger? Winking smiley
