Question
Should I Be Worried? Toddler not speaking fully...
My daughter will be 4 in March 2009 and she's not fully talking like other children I know. She can say quite a few words:
Mommy, Daddy, Kitty, Puppy...there's more but I won't list them.
I worry that she is 'behind' what she should be. She tries so hard but quickly loses interest in trying. She is also not speaking in sentences and still babbling like she did when she was 2. More words pop out everyday but I feel I have let her down as a mother because she isn't talking like other children I know that are younger then her.
Please any advice or information will be greatly appreciated.

Hi! I went through the same. My son was almost four and I noticed he was having problems. I had asked his pediatrician and they said he was fine, we are bi-lingual at home and were basically told that he would catch on. We switched pediatrician and this new doctor actually listed and understood my concern. He suggested that I check out FDLRS. They test your child on different levels and determine his deficiency. Turned out that everything was fine with my son except for that he had a severe speech delay. We don't exactly know what caused it, he's a preemie and also suffered from acute ear infections. Anyway, we live in Florida and he was placed in a program called PLACE, managed by the county's school board, it's a special education program for children with special needs. The program follows a special (pre-school) curriculum and focuses on each childs disability (not all children in the class have the same need) but I could not be happier. After one month we saw a huge improvement. He was able to communicate better and express himself without getting frustrated because we could not understand him. He's been in the program for 1 year now and has made huge progress. Talk to you pediatrician and ask if there is a program similar to FDLRS in your area. Good luck.
