Shoes-off house

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Does anyone have a "shoes-off" policy in their house? If so, where do you put the shoes when you walk in the house?

I want a shoes-off house but I don't like keeping our shoes in a mountain by the front door.

Any tips for a shoes-off house?

Can everyone take their shoes to their closets? Do you have a mud room? I've had some luck with having a bench by the back door & shoes are sort of hidden under it.

I don't have a shoes off rule but those are my thoughts. Let us know what you come up with.  Nasty dirty shoes be gone!

We have a shoes off policy in our house. Unfortunately, We don't have a good place for them either. We have to go up step to get into the house (2nd and 3rd floor) and we often leave them on the steps or at the top of the steps. I have been meaning to get a bench to put in the hall at the top of the steps and put the shoes under the bench. Mostlyy we just try not to leave more than one pair per person laying there ready for use.

I think I found a solution! I moved our piano bench into the entry way, near the front door, and our shoes are going under the bench! It's working. We drop the diaper bag, purses, bags on top of the bench while we take our shoes off and tuck them neatly underneath.

Now I just need some kind of hook-system above the bench to hang our bags and coats and we'll have a nice, organized entry and a shoes off house solution!

we also have a no shoe policy! with out the shoe dirt i seem to still be washing floors and vacuuming on a daily basis, ugh! i have one of those over the door pocket hangers on the garage door so when we come in our shoes go in there. if the front door is utilized we also end up with the shoe mound but the over the door organizer does help and its great for gloves and hats too.

another problem, we have a shoes off house, but getting guests to take off their shoes is so hard.  I feel like a jerk asking, and its rare anyone takes a hint.  Repair people always do it without asking, yet guests don't.  Any suggestions for handling this nicely?  I'm planning to get a nice looking sign, but beyond that, don't know what to do.  I like the over the door shoe holder idea!

I saw Martha Stewart on the View, she did have a nice idea on this, guest.Go to the 1$store grab few pr's cute peds or slippers.Ask guest to swap you when they enter. And she took old heater grate cover sat it on a box lid sat the wet shoes rt there to dry-drip.

Good old Martha,but
I like the slipper swap!

Usualy a pile of everyone elses shoes at the door does the trick, but if not offer your guests a pair of chep-o slip on house shoes to put on in place of their shoes. DOn't feel bad, it is your house and I am sure that you would gladly oblige in someone elses home. Besides, so many nasty things can be tracked in on the bottom of shoes and with young children that is never good!

Well, a lot of stores like target have a variety of  outdoor bins in nuetral shades for extremely muddy/dirty items.  I think they're in the housewares area.  But at our target near the hangers and laundry aisle I know they have little "shelves" for lack of a better word (similar to the piano bench idea)  Often they fold up, too.  But normall they have three or four rows.

As for the company issue, if you live in an apt like us, we use the "it makes less noise for the family downstairs excuse"  I know it doesn't really work otherwise though.  Have you thought of  buying the blue shoe covers they use in operating rooms?  You can buy them at med supply stores and I don't think they cost much.  My sis in law uses those.  Instead of asking people to take off their shoes she offers a choice and most people just elect to  take off their shoes.  But at least that way if someone really doesn't want to they don't have too.

I have a shoes off policy too! We really don't have a good place to put ours, so for now, I have a two tier shelf (you can find them at Target or Walmart in the organizing section) and put our shoes their. For guests, the shelf is on a small area rug so they can put their shoes in front of the shelf. My husband or myself tell our guest, who don't know our rule, politely to take their shoes off and usually they do. If someone says they're shoes are clean (meaning they are wiped off) I remind them where their shoes have been (public restrooms, etc) and I would rather not have my child playing in a floor of unseen germs. (They usually listen after that....it helps to by being a nurse!). Also, a cute little sign on the door may help too! Good luck!

In our house and at my parents we have a big basket we got from IKEA and that is where the kids shoes go.  We keep the basket inside the front door.  The adults can take off their shoes and put them away or we just leave our shoes for that day by the door next to the basket.  If we come in the garage at my house I have a stand that I used to keep plastic bins on for the kids toys ( got it at target a year ago) but now it hold our shoes in the garage.  I keep a couple of the plastic bins on the stand for the kids and then the adult shoes fit perfect on the bottom 2 rows with out the bins.
