Preemie- weired noises
My daughter was five weeks early and has taken to making LOUD grunting noises when laid down and after eating. She sounds like an old man getting up from a chair! She doesn't seem uncomfortable, but the noise at night is really disturbing and she wakes herself up. She is an otherwise quiet and complacent baby- anyone know what could cause this and how to remedy?

Hi -
My twin boys were 8 weeks early and one son had a similar "noise." I would recommend asking your doctor to check to see if your baby could have acid-reflux. In my son's case he has reflux but didn't throw up from it. We kept him propped after feeding by placing him in his bouncer seat to let him digest. Sometimes at night he slept in his bouncer or car seat (which we strapped him into and placed in his crib to avoid him falling out)
Best of luck!

PermalinkI agree with the other post. It sounds like reflux to me. All preemies have some degree of reflux (most term kids have some too). Keep her upright after feeds for awhile before laying her down to sleep. Good Luck.

PermalinkMy son was not a preemie and he grunted all the time when he was a newborn. In fact, we used to call him "Grunt" or "Grunter." I think it's probably just something some newborns do.

PermalinkMy 3 month old was not a preemie persay (3 weeks early), but she also made very loud grunting noises both while she was awake and in her sleep. I had all intentions of having her sleep in our room until several months old, but she was so loud that I couldn't sleep and so she slept in a cradle in the next room from 2 weeks until about 2 months. My doctor said that the grunting is very normal, and other moms have said this as well. I would check into possible acid reflux - my daughter was diagnosed with it and is now on Prevacid once a day. Over the past month or so, the grunting has definitely diminished, although it still isn't completely gone.
