SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

MY DAUGHTER IS ONLY 2 1/2 MONTHS OLD AND WHEN SHE WAS BORN SHE HARDLY CRIED AND SHE BARELY FUSSED AT ALL... BUT LATELY SHE HAS CHANGED, SHE ALWAYS FUSSES AND SHE ALWAYS WANTS TO HELD. WHEN I PUT HER DOWN  OR IN LHER SWING SHE BEGINS TO CRY AND WON'T STOP UNTIL I PICK HER UP.... I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO BECAUSE I CAN'T HOLD HER EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY ITS IMPOSSIBLE... AND I DON'T WANT HER TO FEEL LIKE I DON'T CARE BY LETTING HER CRY... MY QUESTION IS... DOES ANY ONE HAVE ANY ADVICE ON WHAT I SHOULD DO ABOUT THIS? IS SHE TOO SMALL TO LET HER CRY IF NOTHING ELSE SEEMS TO BE WRONG WITH HER? I DON'T WANT HER TO GET BIGGER AND THINK SHE IS GOING TO HAVE HER  WAY WITH EVERYTHING.... HELP

First- talk to her dr. and make sure that she is not having some little problem that she can't tell you about.

Second- try to use a sling or moby wrap so that you can do what you need to and she could get the closeness that she wants.

if all else fails put her down in her bed and go take a hot shower, cry, or anything that will make you feel better.

My son used to cry constently at various points and I just could not take it. It would scare me so much because i would get REALLY FRUSTRTED. so what I would do was put him in his bed. i knew that it was ok, and I could go to the other room and do what I needed at the time (cry, call my mom and vent, take a hot shower, ect..)Then I could go back and deal with the situation.

don't worry about your baby she will not resent you for taking care of yourself. Her wellbeing is your first priority and taking care of your child's mother is a part of tking care of your child. As I told you I did what I had to do with my son and he is a happy, well adjusted,2 1/2 year old.

Do what you have to and as long as your baby is safe trust your instincts even when not everyone agrees.

I used to have the same problem with you. I agree with Kascalco. You can use sling. Newborn usually loves sling, because they can hear mommy's heartbeat and feel warm. Or if you bottlefeed, probably gassy problem, maybe you can try dr.Brown bottle. Or if you have Children's Song CD, you can put your baby on your baby's crib and turn it on, usually baby likes to hear children's voice.

Good luck!

I agree with the other Mom's about trying a comfortable carrier for her when you need to get stuff done. Don't worry about spoiling her yet. Babies don't have the ability to learn to self sooth until after 4 months old. Til then they depend on you for ALL their needs. You really can't spoil a 2 month old.

If you are formula feeding, you may want to try changing your formula. My sister had the same problem with her 2nd and by chance the store didn't have her normal formula so she bought a different brand. It was an immediate change in her son, but she didn't put 2 and 2 together until she bought her normal brand the following week and he went right back to the same "unsettled" behavior much like your daughter. I breastfed my daughter and found that she had problems when I ate broccoli(which I LOVED to eat). Your daughter is a little past the time when Colic usually shows up but I wouldn't rule that out either. Check with her pediatrician.

I would also try a vibrating bouncy seat or play mat. My daughter hated vibration, but loved her swing. My sisters children (3) all hated the swing but loved vibration. It's trial and error, just keep trying different things. Put her in/on different things and sit with her talking/singing to her. She will be comforted by hearing you and you may be able to get her used to not having to be held to know you are still there. When all else fails, put her in a safe spot(crib, swing, floor, etc...) and take a break. Turn on the vacuum or radio, anything noisy to drown out the crying and take 5-10 minutes to just breathe. All the best to you.

My baby had a similar experience.  I ordered a product (liquid drops) called Colic Calm (www.coliccalm.com).  This worked wonders.  It is different from OTC gas drops.  I used both gas drops and Colic Calm together.  I give the Colic Calm to my baby when she starts fussing/crying.  I walk her around the house while holding her in her favorite position for about 5-10 minutes and then I put her in swing and she rests peacefully.

All these moms have such great advice! I just have a couple things to add: my doctor told me colic or gas can also be caused by mom eating dairy products if you are nursing. I wasn't surprised to see Jodi say broccoli can have a similar effect. If you're nursing it could be a variety of things in your diet; if you're bottle-feeding it could be that your baby needs a different formula. Some are made to be more easily digestible.

Also, white noise can sometimes help calm a baby. I used to take my daughter into the bathroom with the noisy fan on. Sometimes that worked by itself, sometimes she needed the shower on too (especially if her nose was stuffed up..) Vacuum cleaners and dishwashers can help too; I guess different babies react to different sounds so just try a few. And a friend told me sometimes holding the baby upside-down (over a bed if you're nervous) can calm them down. I guess this is because the spend the last couple of months in the womb upside-down. I never tried it but it makes sense.

The only other thing I can add is: this is a phase your baby is going through and it will not last forever! Just remind yourself of this when it's getting really rough. In a few months you'll *almost* have forgotten all about i! I know how hard it is so just hang in there!
