Question
feeding a 6 mo. old baby
My baby is 6 mo. old, and I just started her on solids, mainly rice cereal with some fruit, or unsalted mash potatos, beans.....carrots.
I try to be as natural as i can, I need some ideias...what should I be feeding my baby, how often?
she is still breastfeeding (I like that! I want that as long as she wants) no hurry,
I feed her solids twice a day (maybe 2-3 TBSP each time) it depends, how much she wants...
could you give me some more ideas. (type of foods, how often...amount)
I am the old fashion type mom, that likes making things from scratch, and be as more natural (organic) as I can be.
I know this is a personal thing, I just want more ideias.

hi mam,i would like to tell you what my grandmother used to do in feeding all her grandchildren including me (24 grandchild) she used to feed the baby from what grown ups eat, meaning that if we were eating potatos ands chicken, she would take a little piece and hold it tight and place it in the baby's mouth and never leave it,she only puts it so that the baby keeps tasting it and then she removes it(this for solids like chicken and meat and hard uncrushed stuffs) yet as for easy eatable food like vegetables and fruits, she used to crush them alittle with a fork and give them to baby.so this's what my most typical and old fashion grandmother used to do and it worked.just feed him what you are eating
Hi I'm new to this forum, but if I can help in this area I would like to. I have three girls and have breastfed 2 of them past a year and am currently breastfeeding my 7mth old. I don't start solids until they are just at 6 mths. I start them slow, on cereal a couple of times per day then do veggies and fruits one at a time, each over about 2-3days to make sure they don't have a reaction to them. Until they have tried most of the basics. My baby still gets the majority of nutrients from the breast milk. I just read my baby. If she is saying no more then I stop and nurse her instead of trying to feed her baby food and just try again later. I don't feed her 3 meals of baby food everyday unless she is really hungry unitl she's probably 8-9 mths old. I also use those organic teething biscuits to keep her from biting me (they arre a godsend). Anyway I hope this helps.
I assume that as you are breast feeding you are not heaily spicing your food. I would suggest you give your little one whatever you are having for dinner. Right now I think that cereal is the best way to start. Let her digestive system get used to processing more complex carboydrates and foods. Then start with vegetables and fruits. Then as long as what you are eating for dinner isn't heavily spiced just puree it an give it to your little one. My grandma got me a 'magic bullet' mixer. It saved a lot of money on baby food. But do buy a couple of jars of food to keep it the diaper bag for those just in case situations. They will last longer than the homemade baby food.
I am breastfeeding my 8 month old and at about 5 months I started the cereals, Rice, oatmeal(baby), and then barley. Just like you, only a couple of times a day mixed with breast milk. Now we have moved on to peas, carrots, and squash. I clean the veg. cook it in a pot with a little water - half cup-ish and then let it cool. Then put it all in your blender or food processor (blender makes it smoother) and then you can store the food in paper cupcake cups in small amounts like 1/4 cup. I freeze them. The squash is in season now and makes a ton of servings. There are good books out there like Blender Baby Food to give you ideas.
in addition to rice cereal, so far i've made peas, green beans and sweet potatoes and fed them to our 6.5 month old. he's also exclusively breastfed and seems to like these so far.
