He doesn't talk but tries to communicate and we have just recently started ASL with him... if anyone has any ideas or suggestions please help!

I don't have a deaf child but we use ASL with our 11 mo. old. I started with her at 6 mo. and she knows a ton of signs already. If you're just starting out, there are a lot of resources on the internet that can help you out like: http://www.aslpro.com ...they have a section for kids. They show you on video clip what the signs look like; http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm ....on this one you can look up a lot of words you won't find in kiddie asl books; http://www.lifeprint.com also has a lot of pictures with the words. At home, I keep the book Baby Signing 123. I know your son isn't a baby but there are great pictures in there and good advice about how to use it and to get started. It's good sometimes to have a book around instead of just the internet.
Kids are so smart...they're like little sponges. I've loved being able to communicate with my daughter. I have two older boys (9 and 12 1/2) and it never even occurred to me to use sign language. But I've seen a lessening in frustration on her part since we've been doing it. You can start out with one sign at a time. Pick the things you most want to communicate like; eat, sleep, drink, potty, etc. and you can learn them.
The key though is consistency. You and your husband and/or parents and other caregivers will need to learn as well. My boys have had fun practicing it with her. They like learning it as well.
I wish the best for you. Once you get started...it'll be great.
Big hugs.
