No, I'm sorry your OB is way wrong. You should find a new doctor first off.

Second, look in your babes mouth. Do you see any white spots? Are your nipples red and shiny? If you can answer yes to these questions, along with the pain you describe, it sounds as though you have a common yeast infection called thrush.

There are several ways to clear this up. First I would suggest getting some Genitin Violet which is OTC and paiting your nipples and babys mouth. If you notice any difference you can visit your doctor (Family pratice may suit you better since the majority of OBs are NOT trained in breastfeeding, their schooling consistes of a 6 week "touch" on breastfeeding, unless they take it upon themselves to further their education")

Also, contact a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and find out what the protocal is for Diflucan for thrush.

Hope you are feeling better now. It is so hard to keep nursing if you are experiencing pain, especially if you don't have someone sympathetic and experienced to guide you. (And sometimes that takes more than one person! My mom, who never nursed, provided my sympathy, while a nurse trained in lactation consulting provided the experience and great advice. And I had some friends who were nursing too.) Seek out help wherever you can find it, whether it's a local chapter of the La Leche League or classes/support groups/a lactation consultant through the hospital where you gave birth. Look around for local resources. They are harder to find in some communities, but they are out there. You are doing a great thing for your baby, but that doesn't mean you have to be in pain!
