Question
baby that is used to the bottle but doesn't like formula
My baby girl (now 5 months old) will have to start on formula in a month from now, because I will go back to work and will not be able to express a lot. I want her to get used to the taste of formula already, so we've tried to give it to her by bottle. She has been both bottle fed and breastfed from the start (I normally express at least one feed per day). However, she totally rejects the formula milk! I can't disagree, because I do not like the smell of it either! But soon she will have to take it, so please advice! We have already tried both formula based on cow's milk and soy-based fomula...

Have you thought about using donated milk?

Donated milk may sound gross to you, but it is better for your baby then fomula. She may like it.

You can try slowly adding the formula into her breast-milk. I would try an ounce at a time, until she gets used to it.
Is there a reason you're not going to continue pumping after you return to work? My daughter stopped nursing for feedings at 3 weeks and breastfeeding was very important to me, so I switched to pumping. I returned to work when she was 6 weeks and exclusively pumped for 15 months. Keeping your milk supply up is a challenge but it is possible. I kept a mini plug in fridge under my desk and would pump 2-3 times a day in the bathroom or unused office. The hardest part for me at work was fighting the other 6 breastfeeding Moms for the empty office to pump in. You can drink a tea called "Mothers Milk" found in health food stores, or take fenugreek or yeast tablets to help keep your milk supply up. What worked best for me was Non-Alcoholic beer. When my milk would decrease I would drink 1-2 a day, plus pumping for about 5-10 minutes longer each pump, then had more milk then she needed. This was recommended by 2 lactation specialist and my Dr. This is a very personal choice, I just wanted you to know that there are other options then switching her to formula. All the best to you!
