Baby trouble sleeping on back

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

I have a 3 month old daughter who doesn't sleep well on her back!
Sometimes during the day I will lay her on her stomach, as recommended to build muscles, when I am able to keep an eye on her.  I quickly learned how much she likes it and she sleeps VERY well on her stomach.
However, now days they stronglly stress how you are NOT to put them to sleep on their stomach for SIDS reasons.
I have tried swaddling her, which does help her fall asleep and last a little...longer, but as soon as she free's her arms-she is upset and awake screaming.  I have even bought the swaddlers that wrap and velcrow...and she STILL gets free.  But, when she is on her stomach she can't swing her arms around and wake herself up!
Any ideas??  She is obviously capable of sleeping longer that 2 1/2-3 hours at a time, but I can't seem to find a way to do it when I put her down on her back!

When I was in the hospital they put my duaghter to sleep on her side. She never really like to sleep on her back either.  So what I would do was put her to sleep on her side and take a rolled up towel and put it in front of her stomach and chest so she couldn't roll forward but could still roll on her back if she wanted.  Just an idea. Hope it helps.

My youngest was the same way. I put him into two larger blankets just to keep his arms from not moving around. But it did not last and made me more frustrated because of the lack of sleep for the both of us. Plus he was getting to big for the blankets to keep him wrapped up. So my husband and I deceided not to swaddle him anymore and it took about three days of crying but now he learned to sleep with his arms free. It is hard at first but your daughter will some day have to learn that she can sleep with her arms free. It will be hard for a couple of nights but stick to it she will learn and believe me it is easier to do it now instead of when she is older.

He naps on his belly during the day and I check on him frequently.  Then he sleeps on his back at night.  This seems to work for him - not so much time exclusively on his back.

Both of my children slept/sleep on there side. You can buy (in the baby section on walmart) a sleeping wedge instead of towels, its easier cause the wedges are curved slightly to form to the baby so he or she does role over. My daughter slept in hers til she was like 6 months.

All 3 of my babies slept on their bellies. I realize it is very unpopular to say that and I know what the statistics are, but my advice is that unless your baby falls into a hi risk categoyr, let her sleep on her belly. I know I'll catch flack for this advise, but there are lots of us who are putting our babies on their bellies, wejust tend to be afraid ti speak up.
