Acid Reflux
Hi, my daughter is 17 1/2 months old. She has had reflux since birth and it hasn't gotten better. She was on zantac until she was 6 months and her pediatrician said to take her off of it as she was going to start solids and baby food. My daughter has only gotten 4 teeth, 2 middle top and 2 middle bottom. Not sure if that is why she is still vomitting at least once a day. She moves around alot but never seems to want to eat. I can't give her much table food as she seems to swallow everything and then if it is too big to swallow she starts coughing and then pukes. She can eat soft sticky rice, hot dog, cheesestrings, and she eats the little baby jars that are really pureed. THe bigger jars tend to be harder for her to swallow. She is starting to associate food with medicine. Another pediatrician tried to put her on Prevacid that didn't work. I went to a naturopathic doctor and tried Unda 4 and Unda 43 and that didn't work and now another GI doc said to put her back on Zantac and up the dosage to 4ml. That is currently not really working as I can barely even get it into her mouth anymore. She also is very cranky at night and I could never keep her in her crib as she is so fussy. What other foods or medications have you found to work? Does it get better as they get older as nothing has been resolved so far?

My daughter is three months, and we are going through the same thing, of course she hasn't started solids yet, but She still is not eating well. Have you tried making your own baby food? I know that it is time consuming, but it is more natural and seems to help with the reflux and vommiting. Axid is a prescription that has seemed to help my daughter. Aince birth she has been through both Prevacid and Zantac, neither of which worked. Recently she was prescribed Axid ans it realy seemed to be working. I have a friend who is going through this same thing and has been since birth with her four year old, most of my advice comes from her. If your baby will let you, try to rub her tummy in circles, it seems to help relax by daughter, also Mylicaon drops or little tummy drops along with the antacid medicines seems to help a little. My daughter's reflux causes her to stay congested, I have found that Benedryl really seems to help with that and also gives her relief long enough to sleep. If I can keep her decongested, she seems to eat better, vommit less, and sleep a little better. I hope that something I have said works for your daughter, I trully understand what you are dealing with. Good Luck!
We were not put on earth to see through each other, but to see each other through!

My daughter is only two months, but she has the same problem and has been taking Zantac. The doctor also had me cut back on the amount of dairy and rid anything peanut altogether. She had serious baby acne too and he thought the protein sources might be a culprit, has anyone suggested that to you? Cutting back on the above and the Zantac seemed to be working well until just the past couple of days when she has had some serious bouts of gas, crying, coughing, straining, and just this morning threw up everywhere again. But, I'm wondering if I didn't eat something that possibly caused the problem and will wait till the end of the weekend to see if it progresses.
We do rely on the Mylacon and I do the tummy rubs, both of which seem to help some, but I'm afraid that she will have to have her prescription changed. Our pediatrician did say that this usually clears up at about six months when they start on solid foods. It's miserable when they are in pain, you know the cause and you've done all you know how to do, so i feel for you as well. I was giving her her medicine right before she eats, but I think I'll stop that practice since I don't want her to start associating the medicine with anything, especially since I know now that this has the potential to last beyond the six-month mark.
Good luck.
reflux does cause respiratory and sinus problems. the moment , my dauther, who is 15 sniffle, she uses nasal spray. it seems to help.
My 8 mo son had a pretty severe case of reflux and a distended abdoment but outgrew it all around 6 mo. He was taking 2 full Prevacid a day, zantac once a day, pepcid twice a day, and otc maalox four times a day. Of all the meds, the Pepcid and Maalox helped the most (and neither was as foul tasting as the zantac). Infants gas drops did absolutely nothing to help, and Maalox has the same medicine in it. By 5 mo, he had been through 2 upper GIs and an endoscopy. Another thing that really helped us was putting him on a lacto-free formula that we mixed with equal parts of rice cereal. (We used an empty formula can and the scoop to pour the cereal into and measure out.) I'm sure your daughter is off of formula by now, but maybe switching her to a soy or lactose free milk will help. And despite what the campaign encourages, neither of my sons would sleep on their back. Because of my son's distended abdomen, he could not sleep on his tummy, and the pediatric GI told us to prop him up to sleep on his right side. This helped a lot, too.
Also, you mentioned that you were seeing the GI doc, are you seeing a pediatric GI? If you aren't seeing one that specializes in infants/children, I would research to find one that does. We had to drive 1 hour 45 minutes one way to see ours, and it was worth it.
Maybe you can find some more help and support here: http://www.infantreflux.org/Index.htm
Best of luck to you and the little one - Tricia
Apple cider vinegar, citric acid from oranges and other fruits, almonds crushed into powder or very small pieces for the baby, are all good to help with acid reflux. A friend of mine used to carry tums around with him all the time and eat them like candy because of the food he ate and how it affected him. He tried to get a prescription but couldnt so i suggested at first to try a canadian pharmacy then i found natural remedies online for it that have helped him more than any medication.
My 9 month old daughter has had reflux since birth and Pepcid and Maalox has also helped the most. We tried zantac and prevacid among others I can't pronounce and nothing seemed to worked. These prescription medicines were costing us a bundle. Although when I found this drug price comparison engine, I did save a bundle with the online pharmas there. If anyone knows anymore natural remedies please do share.
my daughter has had reflux since birth and is now 15 years old. did you have an endoscpopy done? have you tried Mylanta?
