9 Month Lanuage skills
At our 9 month check up for my son my Ped. asked me what words he says at this point? My responce was "none"!
He never said "dada" or "mama" yet. Nor does he babble much. He will often use vowels, laugh, giggle, or on occasion say things like: "da" "pa" "day" "ta".
This is when she said she was concerned about my sons language skills and is sending him to a speach therapist next week to be assessed.
I am so worried that my son is having developmental delays. Is this a sign of autism ?
I was told he should be talking by now and also pointing at objects which he doesn't do.
Although he waves bye bye and claps his hands when I say Clap and loves to play peek a boo.
He was sitting at 4months 3weeks and crawling at 6months 1week. He now pulls himself up on furniture and stands briefly.
When did your child use words and point to objects - should I be worried or is the doctor being extra cautious?

I wouldnt worry about a thing! If he is saying things like da, dat etc..... thats find. He's only 9 months! My son was saying da da at his age but thats about all! not he tries to say everything i say and more lol! Just pray about it im sure he's fine!
It still seems early to really be worried about this. I'm sure if he begins saying da da and other words soon, he'll be just fine!
My almost 11 month old isn't even crawling yet!! They all seem to develop at different speeds.
Probably nothing at all but in this day and age of Autism it is better to have him checked by a specialist earlier rather than later. How is his social development? Autism presents itself as a social disorder in most kids and then the language delays are recognized soon after. Does he smile at you? Look at you when you speak to him? Show different emotions (happy, sad, etc...)? If he is normal in the social skills, do not worry one bit.
My little one was talking just like yours at 9 months and by 12 months we realized he had a hearing condition that was made worse by chronic ear infections. He wasn't hearing the sounds we were producing so he couldn't replicate them. He has just turned four years old and has caught up with and surpassed his peers.

Thanks for all the responses - since I have posted this question we have been to see the speech therapist and she says he seems "normal". She said that he is a little behind in his speech and he should be pointing at objects but nothing to be concerned about just yet. His social development is great. He is smiling, laughing, playing peekaboo etc.
She gave us some recommendations for speech and some ideas of useful toys that promote speech.
Thanks again for your encouraging words - I was just soo worried about our little man.
