Question
5 year old son has milk and tomato allergies...help!
My 5 year old son was just diagnosed with milk and tomato allergies. He was a HUGE milk drinker and loved ketchup. Now I'm stumped! He needs to be on a milk free and tomato free diet. We're trying the soy milks right now with chocolate flavor. Any suggestions as to what I can feed him?

My daughther is allergic to milk and eggs so imagine how many food items that cuts out for her and she is only 15 months new! I have visited the Food Allergy Network's website for ideas and information. You may want to check out their site and search the internet for other ideas and suggestions. I have found some foods that are milk and egg free, but I am sure you will be able to find many that are milk and tomato free. You will just have to really check the labels on everything you buy or serve to him. If we go to a restaurant I will ask if anything is cooked with milk or egg and if it is, we just don't order it. The Food Allergy Network should also be able to give you tips on what else to avoid in ingredients as you know sometimes a food as alternate names. Good luck and I hope this helps.
That is a challenge if he has had a lot of milk in the past. I wonder if he has been having problems that prompted you to test him. It is more common to have milk allergies diagnosed at a younger age although allergies can crop up at any time. Here is a link to an article on testing that you might want to see.

Milk is in a lot of processed foods but it should be clearly labeled. Some people find rice milk has a milder flavor. Almond milk is another alternative (if he does not have tree nut allergies.) You can cook and bake with the alternative milks but things turn out differently.
