Lullabies
Hi dear all!
Let's share the lullabies we use for our babies
(or anything that serves as a lullaby.)
It's an exciting topic - what we take from the oral tradition, books, or CDs,
what we find appropriate and what our babies love!
Mine gets to sleep really well after "Rck-a-bye, baby, on the tree-top", "Hush, little baby, don't say a word", and "Sweet and low".

Oh, I love this question! I always sang "All the Pretty Horses" to my daughter when she was tiny. I learned it in chorus in grade school; it's an Appalachian folk lullaby. I also use "Hush little baby" and a few other standards. Then we took a Music Together class, and we learned a wonderful lullaby that I believe is Yiddish in origin, called Raisins and Almonds. I bet a lot of people know that one but I'd never heard it before. Then recently, out of the blue when I was getting my daughter ready for bed, I started singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (yes, the one from Wizard of Oz), and then she wanted it again for her lullaby, and for many nights that was all she wanted! Since I sometimes have to sing a song several times to get her to sleep, I like having several songs in the repertoire.

I guess I'm weird in the sense that I sing either Disney lullabies, like 'Stay Awake' from Mary Poppins and the one from Dumbo. But my favorite lullaby to sing is the song 'Dite Moi' from South Pacific' (o, how I love show tunes!)

Anita, I don't think that's weird at all! I think whatever you enjoy singing that soothes the baby is great. We learned when my daughter was really small that she went to sleep better with a faster-tempo song than anything lullaby-ish, so in the car it was always something faster. I found out when we took that music class that kids have a naturally faster rhythm due to their faster heart rate, which I thought was fascinating. The teacher demonstrated by drumming a fast beat, then a slow beat. The kids who were participating tended only to be able to go along with the faster beat. Cool stuff (or am I just being a nerd? hee hee.)

The first song I ever sang to Avery was in the hospital and it was the song I heard last as I was pulling into the hospital parking lot on my way to have her. It is "Big Yellow Taxi." I still sing it all the time. Others in my night time collections include Favorite things from the sound of music, Twinkle Twinkle little star for which I made up my own lyrics and Hush little baby. Usually by the time I get to Hush Little baby, she is asleep....then I sing, "I'm free to do what I want any old time!" LOL

Oh my gosh, I love lullabies! My oldest is 15 and it all started with her when I was pregnant! I sang to all three of my girls when they were just an egg! LOL My youngest is now 8 and lullabies are still part of her nighttime routine. They will be until she asks me to stop! I sing Hush Little Baby, Rock a Bye Baby, Lullaby and Goodnight, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Star Light Star Bright, Winnie the Pooh, I love you, you love me (Barney song) and I end with Skitamarink a dinky dink, (SP?) LOL.
