Stomach Flu
My son was diagnosed with the stomach flu at an after hours Dr's office late this afternoon... after throwing up numerous times and not drinking anything, He is still not interested in anything not even Popsicles and I am so worried that he will dehydrate. The Dr prescribed us some suppositories for vomiting and they seem to work just OK, he is still dry heaving and if one little drip of something goes in his mouth he will throw it up... is a little better then nothing at all? I am so worried that we will have to make a trip to the ER for an IV...
Anyone have any advice on how to keep this little guy hydrated?

There is definitely something going around! We just went through the same thing. My daughter (15 mos) was throwing up for about 5 or 6 hours. I tried to give her water, but she would just throw that up soon after she drank it.
For that day, we gave up on trying to get her to eat or drink much. The next day she was much better and loved the Pedialyte (grape flavor) we mixed with water. She sat on the couch and drank glass after glass through a straw! Not sure how old your son is, but you could probably make the same concoction for his bottle. After that I felt much better, and so did she. Although this thing is a bit lingering. For the next 4 or 5 days I would only give your son such things as banana, applesauce, toast and rice. And of course, plenty of liquids!!!
I hope he feels better soon, and I really hope you don't get it. We've all suffered and it's not fun. Good luck!

PermalinkTry to wait and hour after vomiting before giving any fluids. If he takes that then give im *small* amounts every 5 min. If he is a baby then about 1 tsp. Kepp it slow or it will come back up! Keep an eye out for dry lips and mouth, lethargy, and sunken soft spot (if he has one still). those are all signs of dehydration

Permalinkmy daughter just got over it too. A lot of throwing up and dry heaving when she had nothing left in her. Watch the diapers. If there is a cease in wet diapers, that is a good sign of dehydration. Just keep trying to keep fluids in your little one. Even if it seems pointless.

Permalinkmy daughter had a stomach virus recently. she was only 4 months, but the dr. told me to stop giving her milk, since the lactose sometimes will make it worse. he put her on pedialyte and soy-based formula dieat. i had to feed her really slowly and it eventually got better! good luck, it can be very tiring on mommy as well as baby!

PermalinkIt takes about 6 to 12 hours for a baby to dehydrate so use that as a guideline. I think the best thing to try is Pedialyte frozen popsicles, or the drink in general. It works really well!

PermalinkI agree on the Pedialyte its definitely something good to have, even gatorade, jello etc it's what I was told to have when I had some mild food poisoning and couldn't eat anything so i drank that to stay hydrated. I also ordered some discount vitamins online along with shakes to have to keep getting my nutrients.

PermalinkIf your little one refuses this stuff too, try ginger ale - the real stuff, not the cheap brands because they don't use ginger so it could actually upset their tummy more. The ginger will help settle their tummy, and then you can maybe get something solid to stay down too. Also, the fizz may seem foreign, so you might want to let them try it flat. I know it sounds nasty, but when my little guy had a stomach bug in January, we went through a lot of flat ginger ale. I'd pour him a large glass the night before so I had something to start with the next day.
