Which is better to train a child to use the potty...a little potty or a child seat that is on an adult toilet with a footstool? How early do you potty train?

I never bothered purchasing a potty chair. I use a child seat on an adult toilet for my Daughter. I didn't want to "double" train her. If she learned on a potty chair, I would have had to eventually re-train her to use the adult toilet. Plus, bathrooms and toilets are designed for a specific purpose, I didn't feel it was right to teach her that it was ok to pee and poop in a "bucket" then dump where it was supposed to go in the first place. It was easier to just use the regular toilet to begin with. I started putting her on the potty at 18 months to get her familiar with it. She finally fully trained 2 weeks after her 3rd birthday. Every child is different and will train in their own way at their own time. Some children are afraid of the toilet, I never had that issue with my daughter. Some parents swear by the potty chair method...I just found it a waste of time.

I started getting my daughter used to the potty at 6 months.  I would sit her on it, but she would cry and cry.  After awhile she got used to it and stopped crying.  I waited for a couple of months and when she was 8 months I decided to start training her.  I did this with my son and he was trained before his first birthday.  I would put my daughter on the potty chair every hour.  Eventually her body got trained and she started using it.  She has just turned one years old a week ago and she has graduated to the toilet with her own seat.  She now stays dry for two hours at a time.  I can tell when she has to pee and poop.  You have to watch your child and they will show signs of when they have to go.  When she has to poop she will fret and keep walking around looking like she is lost. When she has to pee she will stand with her feet apart and looks like she is trying to squat.  Then,  she will look down or look at me.  I just figured out today when she has to pee.  I put her in training pants during the day and when I take her to the toilet a majority of time she is wet and will not go in the toilet, but know that I Know her signs I know when to take her to the toilet.  Also, you could try letting your daughter watch you urinate in the toilet or if it is a boy let him watch his Dad.  At this age children love to imitate us.  I let my daughter watch me and now when she gets on the toilet she tears off a piece of toilet paper and tries to wipe herself and throws it in the toilet.  You could also, let her sit on her potty while you sit on the toilet and this should work

I started with a seat on the toilt. I knew that my baby boy would just fall over and crawl away if I used a little potty.  He does great with the seat.

I bought a child potty when my daughter was around a year. She sat on it and was intrigued by the fact that it was basically a mini version of the one mom and dad use. (Not that she ever saw my husband use the toilet...) When she actually started training, she cued in very quickly to the fact the can use either toilet. She actually chooses which one she wants, or if her potty is downstairs and we're upstairs, she just sits right down on the big toilet. Sometimes she uses her seat (it detaches from her potty), sometimes she doesn't. I think this is teaching her that toilets can be different, but serve the same purpose. She sat right down on the regular toilet at my MIL's house without even batting an eyelash, so I think my theory is right. Winking smiley

We never bought a potty seat. My kids used the (adult) toilet seat. And they started sitting training wen they were 2-3 yrs old. Now my son is gonna be 5 yrs old next mth. And he's been fully PT for 5mths. My 3 yr old daughter only wears pull-ups wen she sleeps. But during the day she has BIG girl underwear.
