I'd have to really know the person handing them out. I just don't think anyone hands out homemade stuff anymore. I have to say, though, that I got a little sad yesterday when I saw pre-packaged popcorn balls at the store. We had a neighbor (she was several streets over, actually, but it was a small town) who used to hand out homemade popcorn balls. Somehow packaged ones just seem depressing. I think a nice thing to do if you have neighborhood kids is just to invite a small group to your house for snacks before they head out.
I didn't think anyone made homemade treats these days but I was on a Halloween Twitter party and several moms mentioned making cookies and popcorn balls.
When I was a kid, first thing mom did was toss out all the homemade and open foods. We weren't allowed to eat anything until she examined it. Of course, this was back in the day where there were all those urban legends about tainted candy. You don't hear that so much anymore (thank heavens.)
There's probably no harm in it, as long as your child isn't allergic to anything that might be in the cookies, but it makes me uncomfortable.
I know, remember when it was always about the razor blades in the apples? That was enough to make me swear off apples altogether for awhile! You don't hear this stuff as much, but...some local hospitals do provide free x-ray screening of the candy. So apparently there's still a threat -- whether real or perceived, I couldn't say.
The way it is today you just never now i wouldn't trust it. I don't even trust the candy thats not homemade i think its best to just go to a party of someone you trust or throw one for the kids yourself
This makes me think about a couple Halloweens ago: I made these chocolate ghosts on a stick (you can see them on the Martha Stewart website) and the kids went NUTS over them! But I wonder how many parents took them away from them at the end of the night. But you know, I wouldn't blame them one bit!! Now that I'm a mom, I'd do the same!
i would have to know the person.i love taking my kids trick or treating, but i have to be cautious as well.oh happy halloween ladies
last year we made popcorn balls for our kids and made caramel apples and i bakes a cake for them.i didnt have the money to take them cause they didnt have a costume,i bought so much stuff and we didnt have alot of trick o treaters.so this year im takin them.i like baking for them but i know people arount where i live would never accept a home made baking good
I have always taken my girls trick or treatin and at the end of the night I switch their candy with candy I purchase from the store and they are ok with it. I just wont take a chance on them eating something from trick or treatin unless it is from someone we know which I will usually keep separate as we go.
