Sleep Forum
This is a group for all parents who have questions or concerns about sleep. Newborn waking up too many times at night? Toddler STILL not sleeping in her own bed? Not sure if you should give him another bottle before bedtime? Come and ask the experienced moms at the Sleep Forum.
Short update on my daughter's sleep habits and welcome to new members
Greetings,
Just to update everyone who's been reading about my new sleep tactic on another thread here in the group: We are slowly but surely getting settled in at my mother-in-law's place. My poor darling daughter had a few rough nights where she woke up several times. We let her come in bed with us a little earlier than normal a few times, but she seems to be getting used to being here. I don't know if she really understands that we're just going to be staying here for awhile, though I have tried to explain. The big change we're going through now is that I am trying to eliminate her nap! She is not quite three yet and I know this is early to give up a nap completely, but when she was a year old she went from two naps per day to one, which is also early. It's been three days now and she's been getting to bed by around 8 every night, which is the earliest she's ever gotten down. She gets tired by the end of the day, but less and less, so I know she's adjusting. I suspect that after a few more nights of getting her down by 8-ish, she'll start staying asleep longer and we'll get to start adding some stickers to her poster again!
On another note, I am so glad to see so many new members! I think we were at 39 members for this group last time I looked, which is awesome! Don't be shy; post all your sleep-related questions, share your knowledge, or just tell us a funny story. We love to hear from everyone!

I think we've been down to one nap since Robbie was about 7 months old!

Oh my gosh, Anita, Robbie is an active one, isn't he? It seems like the super wiggly ones are the ones who eschew the naps a little earlier. But 7 months is very early. I hope you have ways to get the breaks you need during the day! I used to lie down with Emma to get her to take a nap, because she wore me out so much I needed a nap too. People don't believe how much energy she has but she definitely has more than average. It sounds like Robbie does too.

Reading this it reminds me of a boy from our moms group who has never taken naps- at least not past about the 3 month stage! Hard to believe, but he just turned 2 and he's fine. Not sure how she dealt wtih it though, it's nice to have those breaks
Patti, it sounds like your daughter is definitely adjusting to the new place - good news!! My daughter gave up her second nap right at 1 as well. Is 3 the normal time to give up naps completely?
By the way, she is still waking up at 7am, which is actually turning out to be just fine, she falls asleep no later than 8:30 and naps for about 2 hours every day.
Nice to see all the new members
HI There-
Avery is almost 11months and is starting to drop her second nap. It is a rare day anymore for us to get two naps which almost kills me as I am so exhausted by the afternoon. But a quick update on the night time, we seem to be getting back to normal again, whatever normal is. It isn't taking more than 30 mins to get her to sleep which is a welcomed relief after those 1 1/2 hour-2 hour nights.
I think my new obstacle will be trying to switch her bottle times. We have used the bottle to go to sleep at night, which I want to stop before too long and before she becomes too attached to it.

I do have those occasional times when I know he's exhausted that I take him into my room and lay down with him. He usually ends up squirming for a half hour, but he's not screaming because I'm right there. He gets a nap, and I get a nap, it all works out. Even if he doesn't end up falling asleep, I still get some rest because I'm not running around after him, but he's still having fun. (He seems to love playing on my bed! Under all the covers, on top of the covers, and he even likes to scream out the window!) It's definitely a challenge these days, but we're working on it. He does get formula right before bed time, but that's always in a sippy cup. Although, I now have to find another type of sippy cup because I've discovered that the one that he has is busted in the tip (he won't stop biting them!) I'll look when we're in California, but this week has been so crazy!!! (His b-day party is this Saturday and the genius that I am decided to have an open house! We're having almost 90 people here!!! UGH!!!)

Yogamom: Sounds like you have a new schedule on your hands but I'm glad it's working out. Seven is a good time to wake up anyway. You'll be just about ready for school to start when your daughter is ready! Your story reminds me of a mom I met at a playground once. Her 3-year-old girl was just running around the sandbox in a circle over and over and over again. I must have given the mom a quizzical look because she told me, "She does this at home too. All she does is run. And she never naps." Phew! It made me feel like I have a lazy little slug on my hands! I don't, of course, but I was sure glad I'm not that mom. Although, I have to say that little girl is almost surely destined to be a long-distance runner. You should have seen her long legs!
Girlwolf: Glad your nights are going more smoothly. We go through periods where it's hard to get to sleep too. And it always passes. It seems to usually happen only when she's extra tired, we're going through some kind of change like teething or dropping a nap (or moving out of our bed) or her schedule's been disrupted somehow. Which is, um, just about always! LOL!
Anita: have fun on your trip to California. You're going up north, right? Wish I was still up there so we could meet for coffee! As for those sippy cups, let me just tell you that we've gone through at least a dozen of those things. Either she bites through them or the stupid little valves in the lid start falling out (they shrink or something) and then they leak. I don't think there's any perfect one, but if you find one, do share! Good luck with that open house. Because you're sort of dreading it, you'll probably end up having a wonderful time. Enjoy!

I actually found that the gerber sippy cups with the two handles on the side work best for biting teeth, but I don't think he's used them long enough for the valves to fail. We'll see though. We'll be in Windsor/Santa Rose area. I would love to have met you for coffee, but 'C'est la vie!". As for the open house, one of my spiritual gifts is hospitality, so yes, I'll be busy, but I'll be doing what I love! Talk to you later!

Those Gerber cups did last us a long time, but eventually the cracks on the opening got to be too big or the valves fell. We used them for probably close to 2 years, though, so I guess in retrospect they did hold up pretty well. The ones that drive me crazy are the Playtex Insulators. They're taller, with no handles, and I liked them because they weren't too big around so small hands can hold them easily. But those are the ones that have the valves that come out after what seems like too short a time for me. I guess it's the bigger ones where I haven't found one I really like yet.

HI Ladies-
I was reading about all the sippy cup delimeas. Here is a question for you. I have been tring to give Avery the sippy cup instead of the bottle at night and other times but it comes out too fast for her and she ends up spitting most of it out. I have tried both the starter cups from gerber and playtex and both are the same. She only takes a #2 nipple on her bottle because she likes the slower flow. Did any of you have this same issue? We have been using a sippy cup since 7 months and this has always been the problem for us. She ends up getting frustrated and throws the cup across the room. You all have such great advice. I really enjoy reading your posts.
Anita-good luck on the open house. I have that same gift for hospitality and sometimes I get myself in to much!! LOL. So far our birthday list is at 46 people. I hope it stays that small. UGH!

Hmm, I'm afraid I don't have any good ideas about slower-flowing sippies. I'd just try a new one every now and then. If you don't want to spend the money, though, I'd probably just consistently give one type to her and just give her a chance to get used to it. Eventually she'll come to understand that if she doesn't take the beverage from that cup, she won't get any. As long as she doesn't get too frustrated because she's thirsty/hungry, it should be fine. Other people might have better ideas, though. I was lucky in that my daughter liked her liquids and would take them just about any way. Oh, if you're using Avent bottles, they do sell those sippy adaptors that you use in place of the nipple. That might be worth a try too.
