Some babies do get the infection without additional risk factors (which may have
been the case with Adam). If mothers aren’t given intravenous antibiotics in
good time, preferably four hours before birth, the baby may die or suffer
long-term complications, including cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, speech
problems, severe mental retardation and learning difficulties.
