My name is Melissa and I often go by Mel but I don’t have a preference. I'm 35 years old and a first time mom. My son will be 7 weeks old on Monday so I just know we are only days away from that first smile. He smiles and giggles in his sleep constantly so we've had some great sneak peeks. His name is Jensen David. Jensen is a Nordic name to honor my husband’s ancestry.
Jamie, my dh, and I have been together since July 20, 2002. We are a match.com success story and it was love at first sight. We moved in together in September of the same year then decided to get married when we decided to have a baby. We married on the 4-year anniversary of that first date last year. We had a getaway wedding and went to Boston. It was a wonderful week. It was sort of a last hoorah! LOL. Jamie and I love to go to Irish pubs and try new beers so it was the perfect destination. We also started trying to get pregnant on the first day of the trip and while he was not a honeymoon baby we were pregnant with Jensen 23 days later.
Because of my age and the number of years I had been on birth control I had expected it to take some time. Soon after we returned from Boston I purchased a basal thermometer anticipating that I would need a little help. The funny part about that is that I was already 9 days pregnant the day I bought the thermometer! We found out we were pregnant really fast. My body told me right away with a dizzy heat flash, very tender breasts and MANY trips to the bathroom. I thought it couldn’t be already but I took a pregnancy test about 3 days before my period was due and it turned positive immediately.
I’m also a student on again off again since 1989. Still no bachelor’s degree but I’m only 5 classes away from finishing. I’m taking the summer off. Typically I take 2 classes per semester but I see no way I could possibly take 2 classes in the fall and keep up with an infant so I will need to drop to 1 class per semester. That means the Financial Aid folks will start hounding me soon. I’m not sure what I’ll do about that because we’re not ready to add that bill. When Jensen is 1 or 2 I will start a grad program probably in clinical psychology. I hope to eventually work with people in an institutional setting with severe eating disorders.
Jamie and I want me to be a stay at home mom until Jensen goes to school. We are considering having a second child so we would wait a little longer. I had a rough pregnancy toward the very end. I have chronic hypertension for which I’ve taken meds for about 9 years. At the end of my pregnancy my bp was typically 180/110 and went as high as 203/121. At week 36 I had some protein in my urine but my doc said it was still in the ok range. On my Monday 37-week visit, after spending Thursday and Friday of the previous week in labor in delivery with blood pressure and swelling problems, my doc said, “let’s have a baby.” I thought she was going to make me wait until week 38 so we were really surprised. Jensen was full breech so I had to have a C-Section. Jensen David joined the world with a loud wail at 5:49 pm.
That’s probably enough to get us started. Ask me questions, please! I hope to get to know everyone. Oh, I guess I should say where we live, lol! We’re in Liberty, TN. We're about 1 hour from Nashville and 40 minutes from Murfreesboro and Lebanon. We go to Murfreesboro a lot because there is NOTHING where I am. Nothing, that is, other than some incredibly beautiful country.
Hi Mel,..I am new as well. My name is Jessica, I am 33 years old. I am mother to 4 kids, ages 13,12,10 and 6. I am also homeschool mom and working mom.
I try and guggle around but not easy.
Hi Jessica. We're thinking about home schooling as well. What got you started? Have you enjoyed the experience? What do you like and dislike about it?
Hello SAHM's. My name is Tricia. I just joined mothersclick this afternoon. I have 2 boys, Adam will be 2 in a couple of weeks, and Luke is 8 months old. I am also 4 months preggo with boy #3. My husband and I recently moved our family away from the Wash.DC metro area and bought a small house with a yard in southern PA. Hubby still commutes to his job in N.VA daily though. So far I haven't met a lot of people around here...So does SAHM mean stay at home mom, or stuck at home mom?
Adam has been through all manner of testing for hearing loss to autism all because he doesn't talk. We had him in speech therapy but dropped it because the therapist kept telling us she wasn't qualified to diagnose him as autistic, but she's certain he is. Despite passing the initial evaluations to rule out potential autism, she kept insisting he was and that he must have a serious hearing disability. He passed his last hearing test and the ped. audiologist questioned us as to why we thought he had a problem. The sessions were too stressful on all of us, so we dropped them. The pediatrician did not think he was autistic at all.
Luke has been through his own problems as well. The first 6 months with him were really tough. He had a pretty bad case of jaundice, and had to have his bili tested 9 times in his first week of life. Once the jaundice cleared up, we went into severe reflux issues. After large doses of medicine and lots of experimenting with different formulas, meds, routines, etc., he had to undergo an endoscopy to reveal a potential problem here or there, but nothing concrete. Around 6 months, he just seemed to outgrow it all and has been a perfect angel since then, even sleeping through the night.
The pregnancy has been very tough on me. I've already been on bed rest once for bleeding. The bleeding hasn't stopped, but I am out of the first trimester and the chance of miscarriage has dropped. My placenta is too low and on my cervix right now. I've had 4 u/s already, and the last one we saw what looked like boy parts, but the tech did not want to confirm or deny that this early on. I will be having another u/s in a few weeks and then again in the 3rd tri. to see where my placenta is at.
I hope to get to know some other SAHM's and avoid feeling so isolated all the time.
Hey Tricia! Sounds like you've really been on a roller coaster ride! I wish you all the best with this pregnancy!!!
You really met your hubby on match.com? How neat! My husband and I only dated for 7 months before we got married. We knew each other for slightly longer than that, but not much.
Tricia
Hi Tricia!
Yep, we met on Match.com. It was just in time too. I was on a 30 day free trial and had no intentions of paying for a membership because I was on a super tight budget. Jamie contacted me the day before I was going to cancel my account. LOL. It was meant to be! I'm still very much in love nearly 5 years later. I had no idea that the "in love" feeling could be maintained. It's awesome!
I think lucky people get to keep the spark alive in their marriage after the kids arrive. My hubby and I are still just as attracted to each other today as we were when we first met...and I guess that's why we're expecting baby #3.
I live in Gulfport Mississippi with my three children and my wonderful husband. My husbands name is Jon and he is 33 and he works for a paving company. My children names and ages are Adam 10, Ashley 8 and kathryn 6 months. I do have another son but he lives in Michigan with his father. I am currently a stay a home mom who goes to school full time to get my associates degree in business.
My husband and I have been together almost 6 yrs, although we have only been married about a year. July 2nd is our anniversary.
My oldest son is named Adam, too, but he is only 2 years old. I'm so envious that you live so close to the beach! When I was a child my parents would travel along I-10 frequently, but neither liked the beach, so we never stopped or vacationed at one. I was born and raised in TX and only got to see the Gulf once while I lived there.
Good luck with your degree. I know it isn't easy going back to school, especially not after you've had kids. Kudos to you! --Tricia
