diary of the swine flu
Here is my blow by blow to help anyone who needs it.
Tuesday night, tucking my youngest (9) into bed and notice the cough.
She awakens wed. am with 102 fever. As the day progresses she is
okay, reacts well to motrin(200 milligrams), drinks tons of gatorade and is eating well.
Wed. evening fever increases, along with chills, tears, very uncomfortable.
Long night, treating with motrin and making sure she's drinking.
Thursday, things are pretty bad, Motrin not lasting 4 hours anymore.
She's lethargic and uncomfortable. Breathing seems a bit labored so
we head to the Doc. at about 10am. We talk about symptoms and when and if
to really start to worry. Doc and I decide if she gets tot the point where she can't
lift her head off the pillow, or keep fluids down to call her and discuss Tamiflu.
Doc tells me I can increase dosage of Motrin to 300 milligrams. Sends us home.
Thursday night fever gets to 104.5. Scary, she's delirious and hallucinating. I keep a cool cloth on her
head. She is still drinking and Motrin takes hold and drastically reduces fever. 2am Friday, she starts
vomiting. and I start to worry about dehydration and whether the Motrin will be "kept down" She's complaining
of a stomach ache and I hate to give her Motrin without food.
Friday 10am fever is still down She's asking for coffee cake from Starbucks (her favorite).
She keeps it down and seems much better. Lunch is eaten but fever is back to 100. Will watch her closely
for a sign of a fever spike. Can call Doctor for a prescription of antibiotic if this turns into pneumonia. Since we saw Doc already it will be easier to just call in "scripts" without an appt.
Will keep you informed..

Oh, the poor thing! Thank you so much for sharing this, I know that so many of us moms are wondering what it is like for our kids, it does not sound fun :(
Hang in there, I just hope it doesn't spread to the rest of your family.
Wow, that's scary sounding and so over whelming. I think this is a really clear picture of how this all goes down and how quickly it goes from bad to worse.
I assume you haven't had your child vaccinated. Is the doctor recommending that now that it's past, or is this flu a one time only thing?
Aww, poor baby. It does sound like a particularly tough flu. Keep us posted. Sending good thoughts...

up-date: little one took a long nap and woke up with 101.5 Not bad because she hadn't had Motrin since 4:30 am. Its 5pm and she's drinking a smoothie (stomach ache gone)
and watching tv.. No she had no vaccine. It is still not available at my pediatrician's office. Just waiting for my 11 year old and 16 year old (who has asthma) to get it.
Hope I'm not speaking to soon but for her it seems like the worst is over! 3 days, not too bad.
Oh, poor little girl!!! I hope that the worst is over and she feels much better very soon.
Just be very sure to keep her away from everyone for a while even after she has stopped having a fever. Also keep anyone who has been around her away from others until they know of they've got it from her or not.
Bless her heart.
sat. woke up after a good nights rest. fever still 100.
eating, drinking and mood great. almost done! will wait 24 hours after fever is
gone and then back to life swine free and relieved.
