Castle Gives Single Parenting a Good Name

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Have you ever watched the ABC mystery show Castle with Nathan Fillion? On the surface it's a pretty typical cozy mystery / cop show. There's a murder every week, but the show is on the light side with lots of humor. Castle is a mystery writer who is allowed to follow a female detective around to help him with his new book. Of course, there's a whole love/hate thing going on between them and it's fun.

But what's really interesting about the show is Castle's home life. He's divorced with a teenage daughter. He lives in a lovely New York apartment with her (Alexis) and his flamboyant mother Martha played by Susan Sullivan.

Now Castle may be a bit of a playboy, but he loves his daughter and they have a very special relationship. He's over protective and he's constantly worried that he's being either too strict or too lenient. This week, he was at the police station when he got a frantic call from Alexis. She was at a party with her girlfriend, the punch was spiked and the other girl was falling down drunk.

Castle dropped everything to go and get the girls, brought them to his place then insisted on calling the other girl's parents. Neither of the girls were happy with this, but there was no argument. He had to call. Later an upset Alexis explained that her friend wouldn't talk to her now, because she ratted her out to her parents.

Castle gave her a hug and his support and said, but you still did the right thing and that was that.

It's so unusual to see such a functional father/daughter relationship on TV, let alone a single parent and a kooky one at that. I really have to hand it to the writers for including this side of Castle and to Nathan and Molly (who plays the daughter) because they make it work.

If you've never seen Castle, check it out. It's on Monday nights at 10 after Dancing with the Stars.

I caught part of that and I was in awe of the dynamics and how Castle handled it!

The only show I can ever remember having a good father/daughter relationship on TV was the show "My Two Dads" (that dates me doesn't it??) Even though there were essentially two parents, it was all about the father daughter relationship and I loved it because I had (and still have) a really good relationship with my dad!

I don't get a chance to watch Castle much but now that I see that there's more to it than the typical cop/mystery I might check it out more.

I love this show, and I love Castle!

This past week, they had an episode that was very centered around his daughter. One of her favorite singers was murdered and it had a lot to do with how our teens idolize singers and how devastated she was by the death of this young woman whom she didn't really know.

Castle makes the connection to how he felt when John Lennon was killed - very poignant piece, again, really showing how tough it is to be a parent sometimes.
