Mirena- It's not the only problem we're facing
Isn't it amazing how commissions and pay offs influence a doctor's decision rather than extensive research into the product in question. This is not only true for medications, but in our daily beauty, vitamins, and food regimens as well. Because of money and the lack of short term problems, our government will allow very unhealthy products to be sold off our department store shelves. For example, did you know it took over 20 years for Splenda to make it into the marketplace because it contains chlorine? Do you know that when aspartame reaches our stomachs it transforms into formaldehyde? I have a feeling that in a couple of years, similarly to the tobacco industry, we will be seeing millions of people suing major distributors because deaths and/or permanent disabilities due the effects on our bodies. Yes this country's population is one reason why cancer is increasingly found, but not all cancers are hereditary. It's what we're putting on and in our bodies that are making up for most of the other deaths. The solution, educate yourself before going with a doctor's advice. Remember they make money for pushing certain products.

Hear, hear!!
In the 70's I was teaching school and had a unit on Digestion, Respiration, Circulation. I was one of the first "health food nuts" around and read widely about the FDA, food and hutrition. Adelle Davis had lots of very informative comments about foods, their nutrtional value, and how products are okeyed to sell-drugs, too. Don't fool yourself to think all foods and products in the store anre "good for you." So many companies make $$$$ by selling products that are questionable.
My class wrote letters to congressmen asking about questionable food additives. The answers they received were simply the "party line" about side effects being minimal.
Please check labels and question foods with more than a few
ingredients. The longer the list, the more questionable!
I could go on and on. Be a smart comsumer, and question meds suggested, testing, too. Serve as many fresh foods as possible and stay away from "junk." We can't control everything our children consume, but we can give them a healthy start and be a good example.

I just wanted to say that I totally agree with what both of you are saying. First of all it is amazing how some people take a doctors words as the end all be all. I swear my sister-in-laws doctor said at some point that hot dogs and chicken nuggets are o.k. in moderation and my sister-in-law ran with it, my poor niece and nephew!
As far as the FDA goes I think they do very little to protect Americans from harmful products. At the same time I think there are a lot of people out there that never question what they put in or on their bodies. To be a truly informed consumer takes a lot of work and label deciphering but I think it's worth it to keep myself and my family safe and healthy.

This is not going to make for a very exciting conversation if we all just keep agreeing -- however I have to say "hear hear" to these comments as well! We just have to be more mindful about everything in our day-to-day lives, especially items we consume, whether we put them in our bodies, outside our bodies (cosmetics are my latest focus...I just ranted elsewhere about finding propane in a face cleanser) or just use them (natural resources, etc.) Adele M., it's distressing to know your students got such pat answers from lawmakers. What's interesting is that all these things may have "minimal" effects taken individually, but when there are "questionable additives" in just about everything, there's no way it's not having some effect on all of us. I'm very happy to see so many moms who care about these things...making small changes in our own lives, sharing what we've learned, and refusing to be duped are all things that will make a difference. Keep up the great work!

Well, I have to agree & disagee! It is important to be aware of what is around us & what we are consuming, but it is okay to just live. I am very healthy and active & yet i ate chicken nuggets and fries as a child; though we ate our veggies too. We don't have to be perfect all the time, just smart. Your kids will not become obese if they eat mcDs' every now and then.
I have the Mirena & I LOVE it!!! My doctor is wonderful & that is why I trust her & her advice. I did my own research & concluded that she was right! I also breast fed twins for a year, and I am now breasfeeding baby #3. I do want to do what is best for my family, but I don't want to be obsessed and paranoid about everything. Life is too short! Treat our body as what it is- God's temple!
